No Surprises Act and Good Faith Estimate:

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. This is called a Good Faith Estimate (GFE).

What this means for you:

  • No Hidden Fees: You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services, including your individual intake and the 6-week group therapy cohort.

  • Clear Timelines: You will receive this estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your scheduled medical service or therapy session begins. You can also ask your provider for a GFE before you schedule an item or service.

  • Dispute Rights: If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the legal right to dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

Navigating Your Out-of-Network Benefits & Superbills

If you have an insurance plan with out-of-network mental health benefits, you may be able to get a significant portion of your therapy costs reimbursed. Here is exactly how the process works:

  1. Pay for Your Session: You pay the standard private-pay fee at the time of your session (e.g., $195 for your individual intake or your group therapy installment).

  2. Receive Your Superbill: At the end of the month, I will provide you with a document called a Superbill. This is simply a detailed invoice that contains all the specific legal and clinical information insurance companies require (like a diagnosis code and service codes).

  3. Submit to Your Insurance: You upload or mail this Superbill directly to your insurance company. Most major providers now allow you to do this in under two minutes via their online member portal or a smartphone app.

  4. Get Reimbursed: Your insurance company processes the claim and mails a reimbursement check directly to you based on your plan's out-of-network coverage rate.
